What it does

- Parses your actual RFE, NOID, or denial letter and builds a response skeleton: each objection becomes its own card, tied to the criterion it targets, with an objection type, the officer's exact wording where identifiable, and an overall document tone read.
- Surfaces observed patterns from similar AAO decisions against each objection where a real match exists, so your response can dock in actual precedent rather than a generic argument.
- Generates a streamed, per-objection draft response you can regenerate, plus a separate tone analysis tool for checking your own draft response's rhetoric before you send it.

This runs inside a specific case, against your Case File — it isn't a standalone free tool (that's RFE Decoder, the free first-look version). Every session carries the standard compliance disclaimer plus a "DRAFT — attorney review required" band; nothing it produces is a filed response.
When to use it
RFE Studio is the Respond stage of the Case Journey — the direct Pro upgrade from RFE Decoder's free breakdown. Use RFE Decoder first if you just want to know what a letter is asking; come here once you're ready to actually draft a response mapped to your real exhibits. Its own workspace cross-sells back to Petition Studio afterward, in case the petition draft's own language was part of what drew the objection.
Before you start
- Case File readiness required — a ready CV, at least 3 analyzed criterion projects each with a distinct primary criterion, and at least 8 ready documents case-wide, the same gate Petition Studio uses.
- The full text of your actual RFE, NOID, or denial letter, pasted directly (no file upload on this tool — paste the text).
- Cost: 3 credits to parse a letter. Viewing an already-parsed session is always free (never re-charged); only starting a new parse spends credits. RFE Studio is listed as a Pro-tier tool in the catalog, but like Petition Studio, the workspace itself gates purely on your credit balance — a Free-plan account with enough purchased credits can run it too.
- Only the case owner can start a new session; collaborators with case access can view an existing one.
Step by step
Paste your letter's full text into the workspace.
Example output — a static placeholder is used here in place of a live screenshot; no fixture credentials were available in this pass to capture the empty paste screen live. See the report's evidence table for exactly which steps this applies to.
Select "Parse letter." This is the one credited step (3 credits) — every objection response you generate afterward is free.
Read the top summary card: document type, severity, an officer-tone badge (Mechanical, Probing, Adversarial, or Door-open) with its basis, and a plain summary.
Work through the objection cards, one per objection — each shows the criterion, the objection type, a one-line read, the officer's exact ask where identifiable, and any observed AAO patterns.
Select "Generate response" on an objection to stream a draft response for that specific objection. Regenerate any time — "Regenerate response" replaces the prior draft, it doesn't append to it.
Run the Tone Analysis panel separately: paste your own draft response there to check its rhetoric before you send anything.
Export the full session as a PDF once you're satisfied, or return anytime — the session persists until you start a new one.
Reading the result
- Document type / Severity — same categories as RFE Decoder: Request for Evidence, NOID, Denial, or Appeal decision; Narrow, Moderate, or Broad severity.
- Officer tone — Mechanical, Probing, Adversarial, or Door-open, shown with its basis (the specific language the read is drawn from) — this is unique to RFE Studio, not present in the free Decoder.
- Objections — each tagged Insufficiency, Absence, Final merits, or Procedural, with the officer's exact wording where the letter is specific enough to quote.
- Observed patterns — real AAO decisions the tool found relevant to that specific objection, shown as pattern cards, only when a genuine match exists (not every objection has one).
- Response draft — a streamed, per-objection draft, formatted as markdown; regenerating replaces it entirely.
- Tone analysis (on your own pasted draft) — an overall register (Advocacy, Neutral, or Defensive), plus specific counts for defensive language, echoed negatives, unsupported superlatives, and repetition.
Warning: Every draft here is exactly that — a draft, explicitly marked "attorney review required." The tone analysis checks rhetoric, not law, and the AAO pattern matches are informational context, never a promise that citing them will change an outcome.
Free vs Pro for this tool
- RFE Studio is not on the Free plan's tool list and has no no-account preview — for a truly free first look at the same letter, use RFE Decoder instead.
- What actually unlocks RFE Studio: either a Pro plan (included in its monthly credit allowance) or a Free-plan account with purchased credits, since the workspace gates on your credit balance (3 credits to parse) rather than checking plan tier directly.
- The 7-day Pro trial requires a card upfront at Stripe checkout (not a no-card trial), and is cancel-anytime afterward, self-serve, through the billing portal.
- Start your free trial from
/dashboard/billingto reach RFE Studio through the Pro plan's monthly allowance instead of buying credits per session.

Common mistakes
- Running RFE Decoder and RFE Studio on the same letter expecting different findings. They read the same objections — RFE Studio adds the exhibit mapping, tone read, AAO patterns, and drafting, it doesn't re-diagnose the letter differently.
- Regenerating a response repeatedly without changing your exhibits. A regenerated draft on unchanged inputs will read very similarly — the more useful lever is usually strengthening the underlying evidence, then re-parsing.
- Sending a generated draft as-is. Every draft is explicitly marked as requiring attorney review — it's a structured starting point, not a final response.
- Skipping the Tone Analysis panel. It's a separate, easy-to-miss tool below the objection cards — running your actual planned response through it before sending is where most of its value is.
- Starting a new parse just to re-view an old session. Viewing an existing session is always free; only starting a fresh parse spends the 3 credits.
Frequently asked questions
Does viewing my past RFE Studio session cost credits again?
No — viewing is never credit-gated. Only starting a new parse (3 credits) is.
Do I need a Pro plan, or can I use credits instead?
Either works. The workspace checks your credit balance (3 credits) directly — a Pro plan's monthly allowance covers it, or a Free-plan account can pay per-session with purchased credits.
What's the difference between RFE Studio and the free RFE Decoder?
Decoder tells you what's being questioned and how severely, for free. RFE Studio adds exhibit-mapped objection cards, officer tone analysis, matched AAO precedent, and an actual per-objection response draft.
Are the AAO precedent matches guaranteed for every objection?
No — patterns only show up where the tool found a genuine match; an objection with none shown simply had no strong match, not an error.
Can my attorney see this session too?
Yes, if they're an active collaborator with access to the case — viewing an existing session is never restricted to the owner, only starting a new one is.
Is the generated response ready to file?
No — it's explicitly a draft requiring attorney review, exported with a "DRAFT" watermark, not a filed submission.
Merito is not a law firm and does not offer legal advice or predict approval odds. This is a readiness review to help you and your attorney strengthen your case.
